Used sheds are offered at a fraction of the cost of sheds brand new from the factories and might be a more suitable option if your funds are restricted. If you think of buying a used shed this article will serve as a checklist to make an informed decision. You will find the information useful.
Pre-owned sheds have been used for some years and might not be in a desirable condition anymore. Consider the state of the shed, determine the renovation cost and keep in mind what you want to use it for. Do not go pre-owned shed hunting before you have done your homework with regard to the prices of new ones, lest you want to be taken for a ride.
Factors to consider when buying a shed
You have options with regard to design, dimensions and the material used to build sheds and the function of the shed will influence your decision.
* Design: Sheds have different designs and your taste might sway your pick of a shed. However, the function of the shed should play a role as well, e.g. if you are going to use it for storage purposes, the design might be plain. On the other hand if you want to use it as a working space the design might be more striking.
* Size: The size of the shed should be determined by the space you need for storage or for working, so do the calculations beforehand. The outdoor space available should also be considered. A small garden can easily be swallowed up by an over-sized shed.
* Construction material: If your intent is to use the shed as a storeroom, the construction material of used sheds is not actually important, given that the shed is durable and will last for some years. If you plan to work in it, make sure that the material it is built of will protect you appropriately from the elements.
How to assess used sheds built of different materials
You have to inspect used sheds for flaws that might cost you lots of money to fix later on. Most sheds are manufactured of wood, metal or vinyl.
* Wood: Check for any decay due to the weather or insect infestation and have a close look at how well the panels are joined. Estimate the cost involved if any repairs are necessary before you decide to buy. Keep in mind that a wooden shed requires continued protection against weather and termite damage.
* Metal used sheds: Most metal sheds are made of corrugated iron and pre-owned sheds need to be checked for rust. Inspect the rusted parts. If the rust is shallow, rust converter and repaint will fix the problem. If rust has worn away the metal, calculate the cost of replacing a panel or reconsider buying a shed in such a condition.
* Plastic used sheds: Plastic or vinyl sheds are durable and insect, rust and water resistant. The only thing that might give away their age is faded color which is impossible to restore.
You will not regret looking at used sheds as a money saving option if you consider above advice and select your shed accordingly.
