I am a 14 year old girl. I have a 3 year old english springer spaniel, whose fur grows long, but usually we take her to the groomer to get it cut short so its easier… But now my mum babysits this little girl for 1 day a month. The girl and the dog dont get on at all lol (long story!!) so now my mum has banned the dog from the house while the girl is here!! (mum doesnt like the dog really) So, even in december (in england) the dog has to be outside most of the day, for 1 day a month and theres nothing i can do about it! We have a large fenced in garden. She has a dog house, and i am going to but a heating pad for it. I am planning to stuff the dog house with loooads of blankets, heat pad, get her to lay down, and tuck her in lol. But i doubt she’ll stay like that! She loves being outside, but I am afraid shes gonna get tooo cold! I am going to buy her a doggy coat, in the winter her fur will be grown out long, and she will have food/water. I can also sit with her in loads of blankets in out garden shed which is really cozy lol. But i dont know what to doo. She is gonna have to be outside for 1 day a month, no matter what, she is completely banned from the house for 1 day a month!! Any other suggestions on what i can do with her? Should I put her in the garden shed with loads of blankets, and a kind of electric heater, or let her be in the yard, with access to her kennell full of blankets and stuff??

If you can move the kennel into the shed, that would stop the draft, taking away the wind chill factor. In Australia (and I’m sure everywhere else, seems we get everything last), we have heat pads that you put into the microwave and they last 8 or 9 hours.
Do you have a laundry that she could stay in for that day? You’d have to take her outside for the toilet often, but it would be warmer.
Everything else you are doing is great, you sound like you have really thought this through.
She can’t stay with a friend for that day?
I think she will cope really well, and probably love the extra attention you are giving her on that day too.
    Good Luck!

You are a special person. It is so nice that you are interested in your dog. I, too, hate for dogs to be put outside. You have done a good job with your ideas. I think that an electric heater would work if it was placed where the dog could not bite the cord.

Honestly you are doing a good job but I wouldn’t put anything electric out there. She could chew on the cords and get hurt. and long as she has the dog house and blankets she should be good.

i prefect you get a medium size kennel cage that has a cover top to block the cold winds and snow from the dog.and put the dog house inside of the kennel , put a old blanket or towel that can keep the dog warm when its inside the dog house and leave some hot warm water and toys , dried dog food in case the dog might get hungery at night. you should leave the back yard light on .

I would recommend putting her in the shed in the cold months with her kennel in there with her full of warm blankets and a heating pad. Also put out a doggy bed with a heating pad under the cushion as some dogs don’t like blankets, or if she gets too hot but doesn’t want to freeze either. Check on her hourly during the day and make sure there is an electric heater on in there. But leave on your coat and wait for 20 minutes in there once its heated up. You don’t want it to get too hot, because dogs can get brain damage if they’re trapped in a hot room for to long.
If that really worries you go with the first idea of the dog house and maybe block off the exit at night so she doesn’t get too cold.
    Good luck!
P.S. I meant a battery powered heating pad. If you don’t have one don’t put one in there. Nothing electric it could hurt her. And make sure it’s not up too high or else she could get burned.

is it going to out overnight?… many dogs sleep outside but your dog is not used to it and once a month will be a shock in english winter… once it starts getting frosty at night I don’t think the dog can be outside…
In the day with a coat it maybe ok they are quite an active breed…make sure the blankets are stored indoors so they don’t get wet and damp before use….it’s not ideal… can a friend have it for the day?
