Why would someone want to build a lean to plans in the first place, and where would you even find the plans? It’s true that most people still think of this structure as just a bunch of sticks bundled together that don’t do a thing to shield a person from any of the elements. But nowadays, this is a term used to describe small, sturdy buildings lacking a fourth wall and a door, but does possess a sloped roof.

And to build one, you will need to find blueprints for it that come complete with a list of required materials to construct it, and detailed drawings to show you how it’s done. Furthermore, you should probably know what you’re doing, or at least have a friend on site who does.

And, they can be used for a multitude of conveniences – except for living purposes, of course. So with that, here are just a few suggestions on what you can use your shanty for once you build it, and where you can find some plans to do so:

Greenhouse – One of the most popular uses for this dwelling is the greenhouse. The basic structures are supposed to be relatively simple for two people to put together and make operable during the course of a weekend – according to some of the plans out there, anyway. This is a good use for this type of structure, as a greenhouse makes it possible to protect those plants and flowers by controlling the environment.

Camping shelter – The great outdoors IS great – until something like a surprise thunderstorm happens on the weekend you decided to actually “rough it”, with no tent and no car you can use for shelter. If you own or hold landowner’s rights to some wooded property, you can get blueprints with material lists and directions on how to build such a camping shack, and have it constructed right there. This would really come in handy in saving your hairdo on those kinds of days!

Patio furniture storage – A lean-to can be quite a convenient way to store tools and other things. And, they can be even more convenient in keeping that nice patio furniture out of inclement weather. Plan measurements can usually be altered so that bigger items can be made to fit inside them, along with details for adjusting the sloped roof so it hangs down nicely over what you need protected.

You can find the blueprints almost anywhere. One way to go about it is to dole out money for the privilege of purchasing both the plans and the pricey materials to construct it. And, if you have that kind of cash and know what you’re doing, you could end up with a stunning piece of construction that just falls short of being livable.

Your public library is a great way to find all sorts of instructions to build all sorts of things. But, if you don’t know what you wish to build, there’s a chance that you could get lost in the How To section, so be careful. And, also make sure any “blue print” books you check out, are up to date and not 30 or more years into ancient history.

And, here is some really great news! It is possible to find lean to and other plans on the internet – up to date for these times – and for free! Many of these are being promoted nowadays online, all with the weekend carpenter in mind. However, make sure you only download and use those from “instructors” who know what they are doing, and not the person who can’t even get hired to teach a child to tie his shoes!
