Deciding Between Plastic, Metal or Wooden Sheds? This Can Help

If you are trying to decide whether to purchase plastic, metal or wooden sheds, there are quite a few considerations to keep in mind. Aside from the overall costs, we will be looking at three basic categories. They are: durability; flexibility; and appearance.

Reliability

Plastic and metal sheds are both durable products and last a long time. Exposure to heat can take its toll on plastic (vinyl) over time. Likewise, metal sheds can get blistering hot in warmer climates. Wooden sheds can be damaged if overexposed to sunlight and heat but if the wood is treated, this will help the shed last for years. All three types of materials can be painted which is a real plus.

Since metal sheds are so thin, they can be dented pretty easily which is one negative aspect. Imagine how bad your shed would look with a few good sized dents in the walls. However, by simply filling in nicks or dents with wood putty and then painting, wooden sheds are fairly easy to repair. Wooden sheds are also quite sturdy since they are framed similarly to the way larger structures are framed (such as a house).

Wood Gives You Options

With so many styles to choose from, shopping for a shed can be pretty overwhelming. And, though they all come in a wide variety of sizes and styles, their cost can vary greatly as well. The main advantage of constructing a wooden shed is that you can start from scratch and build a completely custom shed.

For a minimal cost, you can purchase and download from hundreds of shed plans online. If you have a particular need, you can simply alter your shed plans. So, let’s say, you want to store a motorcycle or tractor mower and you need to add extra length to the plans, now is the time to do it. This makes a great starting point for anyone that has basic carpentry skills.

How Your Shed Looks

When it comes to wooden sheds, there really is no comparison for how it will look in your backyard. Use a good quality water sealer or stain to take advantage of your wooden shed’s natural beauty (especially if its cedar). Metal and plastic sheds are much better placed at the side of the house or farther away out of view. Whereas, wooden sheds are better placed where you can easily see them from your house.
